between piecing things together from my dictionary and doing online lessons i'm very slowly getting there. i like that you inject random german sentences into our msn convos and that i actually recognise most of the sentence! haha.

I want to bloody study German at Yarmouth College, GCSE, one evening 2 hours a week, but they STILL haven't got back to me and it's been two weeks since I sent an application. I'm probably going to email them soon.

i'm fussy with what words are correct, so getting a simple sentence together takes at least 5 minutes, lol. word order throws me a bit. i never know exactly where things should go.

Scheisse is the most important German word. Haha. I know loads of German swearwords. Or insults really. Micha only ever teaches me useless things, haha.

Pupsgesicht - Fartface (mature I know)
Scheisskopf - Shithead (you probably knew that)
Geh kacken - Go shit (my personal favourite way of telling people to fuck off )
Arschloch - Asshole (which you already know as you used it in your last reply)
Fick dich - Fuck you (fairly self explanitary really)
Dumkopf - Stupid head
Kaputter - Doesn't have a proper translation into English bust it basically means you're insane or mentally ill.
Kaput-macher - You break things.
Halts Maul - Shut up
Halt die Fresse - Shut up
Friss Scheisse - Eat shit

That's my main problem with German. You can't translate it word for word into an English sentence, and even if you could, the word order would be wrong. There's also the der die and das thing - there's no set rule for them. Micha says "you just know." So I go with whatever sounds right, and I'm correct more often than not surprisingly. Also the rule that you put the noun at the end of the sentence works quite a lot as well, but not ALL the time. So it's not really a rule, more of a guide. Jeez, it's a good thing you started this thread, I could ramble about German all day. A pity, I can't do it IN German, lol.

i was reading about die der das and sometimes it completely changes meanings of words but only some words. i think as long as you remember which ones can change it's ok.

the podcast i've been listening to keeps saying: "don't worry about word order, even if it's totally wrong most people will understand what you're getting at" and that's all well and good but i still wanna try to get it right!

wenn man das accusatif oder genitif usw benutzen will.



If you're using two verbs (eg Ich will dir ficken) you use the 'modal' (want to, will, must, can etc) verb at the start and the other verb at the end. Words like 'weil' and 'wenn' kick the verb to the end too (eg weil du so schoen bist). If you use both, first you put one verb at the end, and then the modal verb after that (eg wenn wir allein sein koennen).


And that's pretty much all I remember from 5 years of german lessons.

Lol, I did French for 7 years and I hardly remember anything except odd words and how to ask where things are or for something I'd like. When I'm in French speaking places, it comes back to me a little, but not much. I always hated French and made a point not to listen. My teacher was a bitch as well.

hahaha. Well I mean, I asked him what you guys said, and he looked at it and got very confused and was all ...um well, the words say -this- but... it really makes no sense and I don't know what they are trying to mean here! and stuff. ;P

He also said a handful of that list of swears aren't really used, and that the "asshole" one is only really a literal translation of it, hence not used in connection with swearing. =P

well neither of us are taking lessons [as they're impossible to find or don't get back to you]. i just piece things together from my dictionary from what seems to make sense, and i do a bit of online learning at live mocha. though i'm only up to being able identify men/women/old people/children/fat/thin/colours/random objects/tall/short.

lol, Ev, buy some books on it? You really can't use a dictionary to learn a language, all it teaches you is vocabulary, not how to USE the vocabulary. And often, the literal word from one language into another doesn't hold the same exact meaning/isn't used the same exact way. You really need to find some books on learning it. Don't they sell those there? I know we have TONS of them for most languages here. Amazon has quite a collection, of course...

duh, of course i wanna buy books and learn that way. i'm not retarded i know you can't learn out of a dictionary. it's more for looking up words i don't recognise. i'm studying online which is the best i can do at the moment. there's no real classes here to go to.

so far i've not found any decent books here in book shops, but i have a few e-books. i've found some on amazon, but i don't have the money to buy them just at the moment.

Great, my German makes no sense! Now I feel encouraged to go learn some more!
